“We had a three day Bengali wedding in Indianapolis, with events that took place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. On Thursday night we had a henna party where I, the bride had elaborate Hannah decoration placed on my arms and legs by a professional henna artist, Minal Shah. This was a small event in Fishers, Indiana which also doubled as a bridal shower that my cousin Sarah organized. Later in the evening, we had dinner with our two families and it was a great way for everyone to meet each other before the big day. On Friday night we had a traditional Gaye Holud ceremony and reception, which is unique to the Bengali culture. This event is similar to a bridal shower for both the bride and groom that usually takes place the day before the wedding reception. The bride and groom sit on a stage and have their family and friends place turmeric paste on their faces and bodies, in order to brighten the skin and make them look beautiful for the wedding. We also performed a Rakhi ceremony where our parents tied traditional bracelets around wrists, symbolizing our new bond. This event is traditionally very festive and uses a red, orange, and yellow color scheme, which incorporated in our decorations and clothing skin. On Saturday, we held our wedding reception at the Hilton in downtown Indianapolis. The bride and the groom took the staged, escorted by their parents. Members of both families gave speeches followed by a traditional Bengali ceremony. The first part of the ceremony was the “mirror glance”. In Bangladesh, it is often customary for parents to arrange marriages for their children and sometimes the bride and groom would not meet each other till the day of the wedding. They might see each other for the first time in the mirror that is held in front of their faces. After this, the bride and groom exchange garlands, feed each other sweets, and cut their wedding cake. This was followed by dinner and more dancing ended the night!”
